Action for Development (AFOD) is a non-profit, non-denominational, apolitical and non-sectarian organization that was formed in 2011 and legally registered in June 2013 with Ministry of Justice under the registrar of Companies, NGOs, Societies and Associations.
It was initiated by a group of volunteers who saw the need to address and champion the voice and needs of the marginalized and vulnerable communities in the South Sudan.
It originated as a result of increasingly high level of poverty, looming illiteracy levels, leading to high prevalence of the HIV/AIDS, malnutrition, low girls child enrollment with high school drop-out rate and frequently tribal clashes among communities in both Urban and rural areas of South Sudan.
The organization has tremendously grown in program portfolio from just focusing on HIV/AIDS awareness to Gender equality and women’s rights, child protection, policy advocacy, food security and livelihood support, delivery of Primary Health care, civic education, youth development programming, sexual adolescent and Reproductive Health, vulnerable groups care and support and fighting inequalities and injustices.
AFOD was formed with the main purpose of empowering and supporting disadvantaged local communities, children, women and the elderly people through health, education, WASH and community led initiatives to be productive and self-reliant and God fearing to restore hope and human dignity.
AFOD organization was also formed to mitigate the impacts and effects of increasing HIV/AIDS infection, persisting tribal clashes/conflicts, domestic violence, build capacities of farmers and ordinary men and women to be able to eradicate poverty at all levels, address human rights related abuses and revive positive cultural/traditional norms or values in society.
