Operational research - Afod program


6.1 Research

As part of our Research strategy, AFOD South Sudan has entered into partnership with a local and International Research firms of Vantage Research Foundation & Consultants and Easy Access Health Systems Consultants to undertake research that drives evidence based programming. Our research area includes; Case studies, Meta-analysis, cross-sectional research and programme/project evaluation. Our 2014-2018 strategy outlined the following areas for research;

Cross cutting research issues:

  1. Efficiency and effective strategies/models for community systems strengthening
  2. Integration of HIV/AIDS/Malaria/TB/WASH/NCD/service delivery
  3. Development of recipes and formulation for treatment of acute malnutrition using local grown foods
  4. Integrated community case management (ICCM) of childhood illnesses
  5. Community Health Information Systems
  6. Development, retention and task shifting of community health workers at primary level
  7. Use of ICT technology to scale up interventions.

Reproductive and Child Health

  1. Family Planning and adolescent service provision & care.
  2. Community based new-born care.
  3. ABC promotion
  4. Gender and sexuality education.
  5. Men’s reproductive health services

Malaria

  1. Prevention and treatment of Malaria during pregnancy
  2. Community surveillance of Malaria.

HIV/AIDS and TB

  1. Interventions to improve adherence to ART and anti-TB treatment
  2. Effective and efficient integrated TB and HIV models
  3. PMTCT care delivery models.

WASH

  1. Gender issues in WASH
  2. Menstrual hygiene and WASH.

Clinical and Diagnostics Research

  1. Essential tertiary care for remote hospitals
  2. Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDT) quality in peripheral health facility and community settings.

We also welcome academicians, researchers and students to undertake academic studies in the above priority areas to promote evidence based programming within and outside South Sudan.

6.2 Internship/Apprenticeship

AFOD South Sudan is in collaboration with Institutions of higher learning both within Africa and the rest of the world to offer limited opportunity for students to undertake their internship and apprenticeship in fields relevant to our programming for a period of not more 3 months. We have so far received students from Maridi National Health Training Institute-South Sudan and International Health Sciences University-IHSU Uganda in the field of Public Health. Limited opportunity still exists in the field of WASH, Education and Nutrition.
